Fun Christmas Weekend!

Saturday, we had the long awaited (by Brandon...he counted down) hip hop recital!  We decided to have the grandparents come up for lunch beforehand.  Mike was driving back from Grand Junction.  Oh, I forgot about our Ward Christmas Party Breakfast.....we hit that after Amanda's ballet. Nicole ended up taking Brandon and Sydney over for me so I could drive the ballet carpool.  It was nice and I didn't have to fix breakfast!
Anyway, Mike got home just before the grandparents came over. We had a nice lunch and then the kids showed the grandparents the new Kid History. I'm sure they loved it!
We headed over to the studio for the recital and it was PACKED!  We were even 20 minutes early!
We found one chair for my Dad and then we all just crowded around.  The kids did so awesome! Amanda's group is big and she, fortunately, was on the side closest to us!  She did a great job!
Then came the boys! It was a cute dance and at the end they all did the worm. Brandon couldn't believe that everyone was cheering when they did the worm!  So cute!
That night, Mike & I went to dinner with Scott & Kellie and Doug & Cath. We decided to go to dinner instead of exchange gifts.  A great new tradition! It was fun and delicious....we went to Takashi! We missed Jim & Kateryne, Matt & Alisa, and Steve & Hillary though.
Sunday, Mike was at church for tithing settlement until almost 6pm.  He had spent 9 hours at church!  He came home a few minutes after our home teachers arrived.  Then, we roped him right into doing the gingerbread house.
Can you tell my family likes the frosting? Seriously....good thing we don't eat the house. We burn it on New Years Eve!

Pretty soon, frosting was on the kid's faces...nice.

 Ho ho ho....Santa Brandon!
 The gingerbread man....hummmmmm

See the tree?  It's not standing...
This gingerbread tree was in memory of all the trees we lost in Kaysville in the recent wind storm! It
The kids had the camera....interesting perspective, huh!
Here is our Dicken's Village and our Nativity.

And, one last picture of Max.  Also taken by one of the kids....nice shot!

December, December, December

It's December.  Wow.  Where has this year gone....that's all I can keep thinking.

Mike is out of town and I'm sitting here waiting to go pick-up Amanda from a friend's house, listening to Christmas music and enjoying the quiet (finally) house as I just put the younger two to bed.

I've been thinking about this past year and if I have accomplished anything I set out to do last year at this time.  I like to think I did accomplish some things.  Other things I still need to work on.  Those things seem to be the same things I was working on last year.  Why is that?

Just too busy?  Probably.  I feel like I'm doing the right things.  I don't feel like I waste time.  Could be the prioritizing...who knows....just more to ponder in the coming months.

Remember back in August/September when I said I was bored because I was pretty much 'down' still recovering from a summer of surgeries.  That is a distant memory now.  But it's a good busy. Volunteering at the kid's schools.  I've been in charge of the lunch activities at the jr high and it has been so much fun! Piano is going strong.

Last Monday, I met my parents to go to the temple and then out to lunch for Mom's birthday.  We were going to meet at the Bountiful Temple and then try to meet Mike for lunch.  Well, my parents called me as I was making my way up the hill to tell me the temple was closed! I should have thought about it, but due to this horrible wind storm we had, the power was still out.

So, I dropped my car off in a parking lot and rode with my parents to the Jordan River Temple.  As we are pulling up the drive, we read the sign that says the temple is closed Dec. 5th to the 12th.  We just started laughing!

My Dad said Oqurrih Mountain Temple has too many stairs for him and he wasn't driving to the Draper Temple, so we decided to do some Christmas shopping.  We got a lot checked off my parent's list, too.

Then, we went to McGrath's Fish House for lunch.  It was fun to reminisce and laugh.  I love my parents so much and really appreciate their love and their friendship.

I'll back up and explain the storm. They had forecasted horrible winds coming through Davis County on Thursday, December 1st and they were right!  Mike had made it to work ok, but said he'd never seen anything like it.  The winds were pretty normal at our house, so I ventured out as I was supposed to meet Renae and Kellie to do some Christmas shopping in Salt Lake.

I jumped on I-15 and by the time I hit Farmington, I knew I had to turn around and go home.  One problem, I missed the Park Lane exit. The next exit was Centerville and it was a good 5 minutes away on a good day.  This was not a good day.  I saw about 6 semis turned over and many more stopped along the sides of the road waiting out the storm. (Later, the trucks were prohibited from driving on I-15 until the wind settled).  Signs were blown out.  Debris was scattered and also flying through the air.  Something hit my car's antenna.  The wind was so bad, it was so hard to keep the car in the lane.  My hands were cramping from my white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel.

By the time I got to Centerville, I was pretty shaken.  The power was out, but I was able to hurry back on the freeway heading north.  I kept praying that I would make it home safely.  I was so happy to see that Kaysville exit.

When I pulled into the garage at home, it felt like a normal windy day.  We didn't have any damage to our house.  We only saw one fence in West Kaysville blown over.  But, as soon as you got east of the freeway, there were blown out signs and many, many trees that were down.

Friday, the Davis School District cancelled all schools due to power outages and blown out windows on school buses.

Sunday, we got a call in the afternoon that we needed to help an older neighborhood in East Kaysville.  More winds were forecast, although not expected to be as bad, and officials were worried about all the tree limbs taking flight and causing more damage.

Church for our neighbors was cancelled!  As Mike came home from doing tithing, he loaded us all up and we headed East. What an amazing sight!  More trucks and trailers than we could count were out helping!  The dumping ground for the debris was out by our schools.  So, you would see the empty trucks heading east and the full trucks heading west.

We had a hard time finding tree limbs to load in our truck!  I kept telling the kids, "this is what happens when Mormons find out someone needs help'  We finally found a house where a guy was using his chainsaw to cut up a huge pine that had fallen right next to a house.  We ran into neighbors there and soon we had a full load.

We went back to WK and had to wait in line for a 1/2 hour to unload!  The line was that long.  There were policemen directing the traffic.  We saw Nat'l Guard out helping and many, many, many community members.

We were able to dump 3 loads that day.  By the time we dumped our last load it was getting dark.  We had a great time as a family and were so happy to help.  It's an amazing feeling you have when you are helping others.  I know our kids won't soon forget that Sunday afternoon.

I'm going backwards, so I may as well keep going.  Saturday morning, I went to a luncheon with Renae, Kellie and Catherine.  Renae's neighborhood does a mothers/daughter's lunch for Christmas every year.  It was a great time to chat with these gals and a few of Renae's neighbors we know.

Amanda and I also went to help wrap trees for Festival of Trees that night at 10PM.  The Festival is a fundraiser for Primary Children's Hospital.  We have been involved with Festival every year but one since moving to Kville.  It was so much fun being with Amanda this time around.  She is an amazing worker!  We didn't get home until 2AM.

Then, we woke up bright and early and went to help deliver the trees at 8AM.  Amanda was a trooper because we were so tired!  One of our favorite deliveries was to the sister of a missionary who was killed just a few weeks earlier.  Someone had purchased the tree and then donated it back to the family. We showed up on her doorstep and said surprise!  She was overwhelmed and then told us she was thinking of taking the tree to her mom.  Yep, we cried a little.

Overall an amazing few days to start December!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! I love this time of year. I love reflecting on my many blessings of the past year.  I have a friend who was emailing a few of us each day with things we were grateful for. It was inspiring to read each woman's grateful thoughts.

One woman was so grateful that her husband had just moved them to a safer rental house, off the busy street where their last house was and that she had a dishwasher this time. I have been so fortunate that Mike & I have always had safe places to live and have always been off busy streets in nice neighborhoods.

I did think deeper after reading her story, because we are all grateful for the same basic things....house, food, clothing, our family, but the reasons we are grateful became more than a quick thought.  As our community and our stake lost a family man through a car accident on a snowy road, the reasons we were so grateful for our families, for our husbands that work so hard to make us happy, became so heartfelt.  I hugged our kids tighter, appreciated my husband more and humbly thanked my Heavenly Father for the blessings I enjoy.

Don't you just love this kid?  We had Thanksgiving dinner with Jim & Renae and Scott & Kellie's family.  It was the smallest gathering we have had ever, but it was really nice! We enjoyed the calmness of the day (minus the broken glasses-sorry Renae!) and the kids played outside most of the day.  We talked and talked and talked and enjoyed each other's company.
That evening, our family headed to St. George.  It was a nice relaxing weekend, minus the Utes losing their game!  My parents had gone to Bud & Kay's for Thanksgiving, so we visited with them one evening.  Wasn't long before Uncle Bud was teaching the kids rope tricks and playing with their new 'tablet' finding constellations and playing around with google earth!  So much fun! We love them and don't see them near enough. They had gone to Mesquite that day and looked at houses.  My Dad was ready to move, but Mom is saying no.

The kids and I saw a movie while Mike watched the terrible Utah game.  We went to Mesquite for dinner at the seafood buffet.  Quite a relaxing weekend....

Now, I am updated! That took awhile!  Today, I was supposed to go Christmas shopping with Renae, but we are experiencing high winds....and when I say high winds, it's like hurricane scary winds. Mike made it to work ok, and when I tried to go to Salt Lake to meet Renae, I turned around in Centerville because it was the scariest drive I have ever taken!  I have driven in some pretty scary snowstorms, etc, but this was so bad I was crying and praying out loud to make it back home without injury.  I had a tree branch hit my car antenna, almost ran into a power line and felt the pressure change in my ears as I drove along.  I saw about 10 semi-trucks rolled over and there is a restriction for semis that they can't drive until 6pm tonight.  I don't know what they are doing at Mike's work today.  I'm sure they can't move anyone.  Out on the freeway looks like a tornado ripped through. Both Mike & I said we've never seen wind so bad.

So, that gave me the chance to finish blogging and finish putting up Christmas decorations. I'm getting updates via text from Amanda each time she's out of class.  I drove Sydney & Brandon to school today because they didn't want to ride in the 'high-profile' bus. No problem. That is the blessing of being a stay-at-home Mom.  I'm here to make sure our kids feel safe and take care of business at home. Our home is fine, too. I just had to pick up a garbage can and catch the bbq cover.  Thank Heaven!

The Nutcracker!

After many practices, a Mom begging the ballet school to let her kids remain in the performance even though we missed a rehearsal, 30 gifts made (hair bows and chocolate soldiers), a week on ticket committee, among many things I think I probably blocked out, the girls were in their ballet school's performance of The Nutcracker!
It was hard to get a picture of the girls before they went out to perform. They get dressed just before they go on stage, hats go on only about 1 minute before they leave, so I had to grab them quickly for a photo.  Don't they look cute? They aren't smiling on purpose. First, they are toy soldiers and those don't smile:) and because of the white face make-up, their teeth look yellow....
Anyway, we were so proud of the girls! They were beautiful dancers and did their parts so well! Sydney was the blue soldier that got to shoot the gun at the mice, so for a moment she was on stage as the only soldier with the mice.  She had to count and then shoot the gun when the orchestra made a gunshot sound.

This night Grandma Arvy and Maddy came up to see the girls. Papa had just had his knee operated on, so he stayed home.  We went to Friday's afterward, like we usually do with the Arvys and it was really fun.  Thank you to all our cute neighbors and friends and family who bought tickets and came to support the girls!  It was a great experience for them and it really is such a great production.  It's always held the week before Thanksgiving, so I was glad for the upcoming holiday for things to slow down a bit!  Great job, girls! We love you!

Halloween Night

Look at these cute kiddos in their costumes! Sydney is a little devil, Amanda is a pink Crayon (all her friends were crayons) and Brandon is a ninja!

This year, Mike and I decided to hand out root beer instead of candy.  Some kids liked it, only about 5 didn't.  We handed out the full size candy bars to our cute neighbors, too.   Even some parents got in on the root beer, so we went through 250 cups!  The night was wonderfully warm and so I sat outside on the driveway, spooky music coming from Amanda's stereo, and handed out our treat!

Here is Mike and Brandon's pumpkin.  After 3 days, it had shrunk al little and made the spider really spooky! Every kid and parent that came back commented on how awesome this pumpkin looked!
Mike called his parents up to look at the Elliott's house.  It was so awesome this year. It looked like a movie set! It was Alice in Wonderland.  I need to remember to take pictures because there are no words  to describe this production.  It is amazing!! Overall, another great Halloween!

Pumpkin Party

I found Brandon wearing this Mario mustache while playing with his legos.  Gotta love it. He played like that for about an hour!
We held our annual pumpkin carving party with our cute friends!  Here is Drake!
Mike and Brandon were getting serious....
 The Jensen clan
This was THE coolest pumpkin ever!  Watch for when I post Halloween to see what this pumpkin looked like that scary night!  Awesome work boys! Brandon loved this pumpkin!
 More Jensens
 Casey and Scott.....Awesome branding boys
 Zoe's awesome pumpkin!
Seems like I have a picture of Scott showing of his pumpkin every year in this same pose!
It was super fun. We had great food-thanks gals!  And this is the only way to carve pumpkins for us...with our awesome friends!

First snow!

Oops...I posted this one too early.  You will see the rest of Halloween after this post!
First snowstorm of the winter! The younger kids and Max went crazy running around in the backyard. Amanda had to be at ballet, or she would have been out there, too!

Nothing cuter than the kiddos enjoying the snow! Hot cocoa was in order after they got inside...they just had sneakers and sweatshirts on! Well, I guess Sydney had her 'fashion boots' as she calls them...but they have holes in the bottom! :)
The new Natural History Museum of the University of Utah was also holding a VIP tour for those companies involving in building and moving everything into the new building.  The building is right up by Red Butte Gardens and is magnificent!  We got invited because Mike's company, Bailey's, did an amazing job at moving all of those very valuable and old items.
When Mike would tell the employees where he worked, they went on and on and on about how wonderful Baileys has been to work with! As Mike put it, they love those artifacts more than their own families, and were so worried about them being destroyed in the move.
The dino exhibit is really cool now! All the bones there together in this huge space.

There are so many interactive displays interesting to both kids and parents!

One of these moccasins is 800 years old!  We got to go into some of the storage areas that the general public will not be allowed to view.  It's quite amazing.

We were also treated to lunch.  We travelled there in the snow, but it was completely worth it! What a great treasure we have so close to home!
