Cheering on...

Saturday was a busy day around here.  Amanda's soccer game was in Saratoga Springs!  She and I headed south about 10:45am for her game.  Mike stayed home with the other 2 kids, took Brandon to his game and then did some yard work.

Amanda played forward and defense.   She played so great!  They won this game 5-0 and we were so happy about it!  Papa Jim came to the game, too!
Right after we got home from the game, I had to get Sydney ready for her cheer comp at Weber State. We left Amanda and Brandon at home this time.  We had to be there about 4:30 and wait until almost 6 for them to perform. This was a dance comp as well as a cheer comp.  It was fun to see dancing.
Sydney is the spot on the ground with her back to us and knees bent.

I like the 'sports' feature of my camera! Almost feels like you were there, right?

They just tossed their 'flyer' and are waiting for her to 'land' in their arms!

Syd has a high kick! Hers is the foot at the top!

And done! That performance won them 1st place!!!
We had about 2 hours to wait before awards, so we went to Friday's for dinner.  When we got back to the arena, we sat down and when I looked to see who we were sitting by, it turned out to be Annette Werhli's kids!  Pretty soon, she came to sit down and we had a great chat!
Annette and I worked together.  Mike & I had gone to school with her older sister, but Annette went to Olympus.  So, we met at work.  I went to her temple sealing....she came to the hospital just hours after Amanda was born.  Her daughter, Kelsey, said she remembers coming to our house in Murray.
We haven't seen each other or chatted for years, so it was a great surprise to be able to see her!

The next cheer comp is at Taylorsville High in May and they will be there, also....so we may have another mini-reunion!

By the time we got home, it was late. It took until 11pm to get kids in bed!
But it was a fun day!

Sunday, we were late for church.  We are pretty pathetic.  It's not even the kids. It's me and Mike who are never ready!!  We didn't go visiting, so we went and played baseball and soccer in the commons.  It was great fun, but we need to teach Brandon to be a good sport.  He's really competitive!

My parent's wedding....

I was catching up on my Mom's blog today and found this story about their wedding day in 1967.  I wanted to make sure to show our kids, so I just copied it here.  It was entertaining and I didn't know any of these details!  I decided I should post about our wedding soon so the kids enjoy ours as much as I enjoyed reading about my parent's big day!  Thanks, Mom!

It's seems like only yesterday that we were headed for the Salt Lake Temple to be married on March 17, 1967.  It was kind of cloudy and cold, but we were excited and a bit tired from all the preparation and activity that preceded this day.  But we made it and were pronounced husband and wife at 9:07 (I think) on that Friday morning.  Butch's brother Jack, wrote down the time on our marriage certificate; however, it got cut off to fit into my scrapbook.

We were reminiscing about that morning as we went to dinner at the Market Street Grill at Cottonwood and tried to remember who sat next to Butch on the couch before we knelt at the altar.  His mom and dad weren't in the temple with us and the only person we could think of was Caroline.  She and Jack came up for the wedding and she was to logical choice.  Jack and my father were the witnesses and my mom sat next to me. My grandmother Hook was still alive, but it was too difficult to get her to the temple as she couldn't walk on her own.

After the ceremony, I don't remember thinking about taking pictures on the temple grounds in my wedding dress.  I did take it to the temple and because it was short sleeved and scoop necked, had to wear some "sleeves and and insert" for the sealing.  We changed into our street clothes and met my parents outside.  Because we weren't having a wedding breakfast, all the family except Don and Karen went home. (Butch opted to take the money his parents offered).  We did take a few pictures with my parents and Don and Karen on the Temple grounds.

Kay and Bud were here from New York - Jack and Caroline were here from Tempe, so we met the Gibsons at a photographer's studio for a family picture.  Much to our surprise, Mother Gibson only wanted her children in the picture.  Sorry, it still seems a bit odd to me, but what can you do?

After the photo session, we went to a Chinese restaurant for lunch.  All I remember is being so tired, I didn't want to eat.  I think at one time, I even laid down on the bench and closed my eyes for a minute.  Butch had been up the night before finishing a "final exam" for one of his classes, and I'd been up sewing one of my bridesmaid's dresses.  We were exhausted.  After lunch we headed for our apartment for a nap.  I found out later, that my sister was kind of mad at me because the rest of the family went to the church to decorate for the reception and she thought I should have been there, too.

We had a few 'missteps' a long the way.  The first - we borrowed Gibson's drapes to put up in the Relief Society room because the ones in there were very "bold and flowery".  When we arrived before the reception, we were knocked over by the smell.  When you are around cigarette smoke a lot, you get somewhat used to it and we didn't realize that the drapes would smell like smoke.  We made a wild dash for some air freshener and sprayed them several times hoping my father wouldn't notice.

The second - Mom forgot to give more specific instructions to the sisters helping in the kitchen about the refreshments.  She had made three kinds of fruit breads.  For weeks she planned how many to make and one of the breads was supposed to be cut in half diagonally.  Well, Virginia Johnson came into the Relief Society room about half way through the reception and said they had run out of that bread - because they had not cut it in half.  Poor mom, she was kind of upset - but what can you do.

We gathered for pictures which John Rasmussen, a friend from Symphonic, was going to take for us.  He did a good job, except he took longer that my dad thought he should.  People were lining up clear out the door when he finally put his foot down and announced that there would be no more pictures.  The line was steady right up to the ending time of 9 o'clock.  We had lots of great support including Butch's Aunt -----.  She said she came "even though she didn't get an invitation."  We felt so bad and knew we had sent her one.  We were glad she came anyway.

Just after we finished up the line and went in to have some refreshments,  one of the candles used by our decorator, Mel Wilkey, burned down to the end.  It caught the flowers on fire.  Luckily, my sister, Karen was right there and beat it out with her bouquet.  The only damage was to the table cloth.

The sixth and final funny thing that happened was that Butch's brother, sister, spouses and friends got together and because they couldn't decorate our car (Butch had hid it up the street), they decided to drive up to Park City and finish up the party there.  Well, Butch wanted to go with them.  That prompted someone to shout out that we had already had our honeymoon - Everyone thought that was pretty funny and kept teasing us.  I was glad to get away to the motel Butch had reserved and so we could get some "sleep."

It was a fun evening and I just remember thinking toward the end that my feet didn't hurt even though I had on a new pair of shoes.  I guess I was just so happy that it translated to my feet.

We left the next morning for our "working" honeymoon in Tempe.  I was required to "teach" at an out-of-town school before graduating so we worked it out to do that in Mesa and stay at Jack and Caroline's house.  They were staying in Salt Lake for the week and it was a perfect "free" place to stay.  Every morning during the week, I got up and went to observe at the school. Butch worked on the car.  He had bought at 1962 Thunderbird earlier; and it kept blowing the power steering pump hose.  I only worked until three, so we had plenty of time to travel around to see the beautiful flower orchards just outside Tempe.

Wow that was really a walk down memory lane.  These are the things that make life interesting.  Now, here we are 45 years, 5 children and 17 grandchildren later, still together and looking forward to at least a few more wonderful years together.

Egg-citing Day!

All the 4th graders at Snow Horse participated in an Egg Drop today.  It was the social event of the afternoon as parents and siblings lined the playground to watch the drop!
The students had to design their own box within certain specifications, such as: no parachutes, 6 inches overall diameter, etc.
Sydney came up with her own design of a cardboard box filled with cotton balls to cushion the egg.
With a little help from Mom and Dad when she needed it....like hot glueing the box together because only 12 inches of tape was allowed....her box was completed!
The Kaysville City Fire Department brought their hook and ladder truck. The rookie fireman climbed up with a bag full of egg transports.....and dropped them!  Sydney's is the red and white box!
This ladder was taller than our school!  Brandon had me get him out of school so he could watch.

After the whole class's boxes were thrown off the ladder, they could retrieve them.
Here's the moment of truth! Did her egg survive or crack?

Whoops! Didn't make it ;(  There were similar designs to our box, but with one addition. They put the egg in a box before putting it into the cotton ball lined box.  I have to admit that Sydney wanted to do the same thing and I talked her out of it!  Sorry Sydney!

Mikey is golfing with some buddies and was on pins and needles wanting to know if the egg survived! We recorded the drop (a short 2 seconds) and texted him when we found out the egg's fate.....

There were quite a few eggs that survived from her classmates, but also a ton that didn't.  Sydney was fine that hers didn't survive after I told her I was wrong and should have listened to her!  What a great lesson the kids learned today!

Easter Sunday

When we got up on Sunday for our 9am church, that darn Easter bunny had hidden the Easter baskets and made the kids try to find them by following the string that was all over the house! Max had a hard time getting to the back door to go out this morning and I had to untangle  him a couple of times!
Amanda had to go out in the garage, through my car, back into the house and finally found hers in our bedroom.  Sydney hunted through the fridge, bathroom, cupboards and finally found it above the craft closet.
Brandon had to go all over the house...in the dining room, piano room, family room and finally found his behind the curtains in the family room!
Since we had to hunt, we were late for church! So, we had to take pictures after church.  This is what made Brandon mad.  Not because he wanted to change his clothes. He normally stays in his church clothes all day.  But, his friends were out riding bikes and skateboards and he wanted to play.
We couldn't coax a smile out of him for anything!

 We tried and tried!

I finally gave up on him, but the girls were willing subjects!
 Oh, we love our girls!

Our Easter celebrations took us through this last weekend.  Both families did their Easter egg hunts on the same Saturday, after Easter, almost at the same time!  Amanda had a soccer game in Sandy that day, too.  It was horrible weather! Hail and rain most of the game. We were drenched!  They tied the game, but said they liked playing in the rain, but the hail hurt!

We loved spending time with our families that night. The kids can't get enough of their cousins!

This past week has consisted of more soccer games, cleaning the church (which took FOREVER because no one showed up), soccer practices, piano, dance, volunteering, TAXES and it's only Wednesday!

Mikey gets to take a St. George golf trip tomorrow with his buddies.  He's not terribly excited about going, but he needs a break.  I'm sure once he gets there he'll have a great time! I hope the weather stays nice for them!

Tomorrow is the egg drop for Sydney at the school. I'm going to try to video it for Mike and hope to download it here.....stay tuned!

Splash!

Here are the rest of the pictures from the Flowers....

That night, we went to  dinner at Don Pedros with Scott, Kellie and kiddos and then over to where they were staying. The kids had a great time playing outside and it was great to get together and chat!

Early Saturday morning, we were back on the road home.  I had to give a talk at the ward baptism (I'm a Primary counselor now), Brandon had a birthday party and we were going to the REAL soccer game that night.  Plus, we were anxious to get back to see Mikey!  We had a great time at the soccer game with Roger & his friend, James.  When we got home, we realized we needed to dye our Easter eggs! So we did that quickly and then the kids were off to bed by about 11:30pm!

Taking time with the Flowers

Friday we spent time with Uncle Bud & Aunt Kay!  We got to see Staci & Kevin and their family for a bit, too.  The 2 younger kids loved swimming and Amanda decided to lay out so she could go back to school with a tan.  We have hit teen-ager......

My sweet Aunt Kay had fallen and hurt her knee pretty badly.  She was using a walker and her knee is all braced up.  Yet, she spent time chatting with us even though she probably wanted to go lay down!

Brando jumping off the jumping rock.  They love me to take the action shots!

 Sydney's turn....

 And slide action shots

I have more pictures to download.  The air wasn't that warm this day, but it didn't stop the kiddos from enjoying the Flower's beautiful backyard and their amazing company!
